FEATURED ARTIST
Louis Kevitt
Southwest Rock Sculptures Louis Kevitt is a
self-described jeweler (sixth generation), mountaineer, and
philosopher. These three facets of Kevitt's diverse life
experience make themselves immediately evident in his work, a
unique combination of organic rock forms and patterns of
semi-precious stone that express an intimate and human
connection with the earth.
"Each piece I create begins with a sandstone
slab of rust, ochre, and reddish hues," says Kevitt. "Each stone
speaks, asking me to visualize meaning, depth, solitude and myth
in a the stone's shape and surface textures. In this there is
play, a game between friends, a revealing and concealing just
like looking at clouds and seeing shapes. It is in the midst of
this that I reach beyond myself. The spirits in these stones
shape me and tell me their story; and in turn I shape them,
inlaying turquoise, lapis, malachite, jet and silver."
